While you were sleeping
Day one in the books. While everyone in my neck of the woods was getting ready for bed and fast asleep, I was out walking like crazy or a crazy person, only time will tell which. I was a little anxious again so that meant minimal sleep. I think by the time I hung up talking to Aiden it was approaching midnight and I was up worried I had slept thru my alarm at like 3:30 but I stayed in bed until about 5:30. Quickly got ready, covered myself in sunscreen and checked out of my hotel. As I was walking towards the starting point at Sè Cathedral, I noticed someone else with a very large backpack heading in that direction. After the nightmare that was yesterday getting super lost and wandering in the almost 100 degree heat for 2 1/2 hours I figured I’d see if I was able to tag along if she was walking the same way. Just my luck ( or not, that is also TBD) she was. I had planned out roughly going about 13 miles each day. She had plans on how far she wanted to go today and me not knowing the kilometer to miles conversion, I decided I’d just tag along with her. We took two very short breaks, one for breakfast and another for a soda and a large bottle of water but otherwise kept moving the entire time. Initially she wanted to continue walking 2 1/2 hours after our last break but I convinced her that maybe staying at a closer hostel was a good idea for the first day especially since temps reached 99 today. We walked about an hour after our last break to finish up at a little under 18 miles. With the high temps today I didn’t want to chance overheating in wool socks with my hiking shoes so I wore my sandals. They were comfortable for the most part though I did get a fairly large blister on one heel. Tomorrow I’ll be attempting to use the hiking shoes instead. It will be another early morning and since I won’t be going alone we may be able to get an earlier head start. Today I walked from a little after 6 to 1:45. Needless to say my feet have earned a well deserved time up. I took a handful of pictures but those may have to wait to be posted depending on how easy they are to upload onto the blog on the hostels somewhat slow wifi. No huge life changing moments or huge life affirming reflections but it’s still early. Tomorrow it’s only going to be 89 and with the coastal route it’s got a nice breeze to not totally overheat you, thank god! New day tomorrow in which I’m hoping the plan is to do at least somewhat less miles than today. Hoping for a good nights sleep in a room full of 12 beds. Keep the good vibes coming!
Will add pictures at home. You can check our Instagram if you’d like to see a reel of videos from todays walk. Will share some on Facebook later.
